5 pm – 7 pm
21st September 2010, Tuesday
New Venue: Indian Institute of World Culture, B. P. Wadia Road, Basavanagudi, Bangalore 560004

India’s Northeast is fraught with multiple issues of contestations over space, resources and territory. Even before India’s Independence the Northeast has been in the margins of the British colonial regime. With increased reduction of civil space in the northeast, it has become more of a colony than a part of India. To people from the “Mainland India” the mainstream media informs them about the culture of violence that prevails. Misconceptions about the region and its peoples abound and oftentimes we see no connection between the other parts of India and the Northeast.

Topics for Discussion:

  1. General Administrative Structures in the Northeast and its implications
  2. Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in the Northeast: Genesis and Impact
  3. Mega dams and the Chinese Interest
  4. How Northeast views democracy in India?
